How can I tell what firewall software I have on my comp?
I have windows xp and norton antivirus.Does one of these include a firewall?
Is there a way to check which firewall is currently active?
Ok, thanks! I got it. Appreciate all the help!
If it’s not on your desktop, at the bottom of your screen (Task Bar), look in C:. Windows xp has it’s own security programs. Go to control panel, and look for Windows Security. Should be there if you have it.
Please tell me if I need to have a SOFTWARE FIREWALL in addition to a ROUTER on my internet connection ?
I have read, and been told that the use of a ROUTER is an excellent firewall. I have the Linksys WRT 54 G.
I have recently read on forums including "Y" Answers, many HIGHLY UNFAVORABLE comments about McAfee Anti-Virus products. I am considering removing McAfee from my computer, and in researching the best procedure, to do this, have discovered, I also have McAfee Personal Firewall Plus.
I’ve been told that using the McAfee Uninstall tool will remove ALL McAfee applications.
My SPECIFIC QUESTION IS: What is the reason to have a Software based firewall, in addition to the use of a router ? Does this enhance your security ? What are the pros and cons ?
Do you have any particular recomendations on any free personal firewalls for personal use on xp-SP2 ?
Thanks for your advice.
A software firewall will have outbound application filtering. It is your last line of defense, if say a trojan somehow gets into your machine and trys to "phone-home" to the attacker.
A software firewall should alert you to this fact that a strange application is attempting to access the internet.

An excellent free and extremely strong firewall is Comodo Personal Firewall. It can pass firewall "leak tests" that even most of the "paid-for" firewalls cannot pass.
And Comodo has a great support forum. Where the CEO / President of the company (Melih) might even himself answer your question! Check it out at:

Or if you prefer a decent and free firewall that is extremely easy on using your computer’s system resources, then Kerio 2.1.5 is just about the lightest firewall there is. Uses about 4 MB RAM on my machine.
Although it is no longer officially supported by the makers of Kerio, there is a great Kerio 2.1.5 support forum at
http://www.dslreports.com/forum/kerio
to help and guide you if you have any problems.
2.1.5 is availible for free at:

How to reformat (XP)
PLEASE READ THIS DESCRIPTION BEFORE ASKING QUESTIONS
YOU NEED THE XP DISC IN THROUGHOUT THIS TUTORIAL
Reformatting is when you wipe everything off your computer and start again. It can be used to get rid of viruses, or just to speed your computer up again, just as it was when you first got it.
I recommend only trying this out if you have nothing to lose, and I don’t want to be held responsible for any problems that may arise. It’s not my problem if you wipe your hard drive, only to find you don’t have an XP disc.
It looks really complicated. I’ll split it up into three sections; Bios, reformat, installation. All three will require about 10 clicks.
*BIOS is used to set up the computer so that it’ll boot from the XP CD
*REFORMAT is used to delete the stuff on your computer
*INSTALLATION is used to install XP again.
Yes, I see the irony in a computer fixing tutorial on youtube.
After this video, you’ll need to install…
*Motherboard drivers (If you can’t connect to the internet, or if you have built in sound or graphics)
*Graphics drivers (if you have an ATI or Nvidia dedicated graphics card)
*Sound drivers (If you have a Sound Blaster card or similar)
*Antivirus + firewall software (If you don’t, I recommend these four, together; AVG, Spyware Blaster, Spybot Search and Destroy, Adaware)
*Microsoft Office (Or Open Office, which is free)
*Firefox
