What are some starter jobs for someone with a computer security degree and very little (no) experience?

Dramatically Improve The Performance Of Your Computer And Make It Run Like New Using FREE Tools

My boyfriend will be a May 2009 graduate with a degree in computer security. He has no work experience (other than bussing tables). Any ideas of good degree-related jobs he could start with?

As an alternative to bussing tables rather than an instant career, Helpdesk in any company is often a good gateway to a more advanced IT career where it’s not just a phone logging service.. Very few people spend long in Helpdesk if they show any technical apptitude!!

A fake anti-virus removed my icons, How do I get them back?

Dramatically Improve The Performance Of Your Computer And Make It Run Like New Using FREE Tools

Hi!! Which icons have been removed? I’m guessing the Desktop icons…

If so, it means that explorer.exe has been corrupted or deleted. Your best bet would be to run the System File Checker. Instructions: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=147786

Best Regards :D

How can I tell what firewall software I have on my comp?

I have windows xp and norton antivirus.Does one of these include a firewall?
Is there a way to check which firewall is currently active?
Ok, thanks! I got it. Appreciate all the help!

If it’s not on your desktop, at the bottom of your screen (Task Bar), look in C:. Windows xp has it’s own security programs. Go to control panel, and look for Windows Security. Should be there if you have it.

Windows Defender Features.

Windows Defender is software that helps protect your computer against pop-ups, slow performance, and security threats caused by spyware and other unwanted software by detecting and removing known spyware from your computer. Windows Defender features Real-Time Protection, a monitoring system that recommends actions against spyware when it’s detected, minimizes interruptions, and helps you stay productive.
The benefits of installing Windows Defender include:
Spyware detection and removal
Windows Defender quickly and easily finds spyware and other unwanted programs that can slow down your computer, display annoying pop-up ads, change Internet settings, or use your private information without your consent.
Windows Defender eliminates detected spyware easily at your direction, and if you inadvertently remove programs that you actually want, it’s easy to get them back.
Windows Defender allows you to schedule your scanning and removal times when it’s convenient for you, whether it’s on-demand or on a schedule that you set.
Improved Internet browsing safety
Windows Defender helps stop spyware before it infiltrates your computer. Windows Defender also offers a continuous safeguard designed to target all the ways that spyware can infiltrate your computer.
Windows Defender works without distracting you. It runs in the background and automatically handles spyware based on preferences that you set. You can use your computer with minimal interruption.
Protection against the latest threats
A dedicated team of Microsoft researchers continuously searches the Internet to discover new spyware and develop methods to counteract it.
A voluntary, worldwide network of Windows Defender users helps Microsoft determine which suspicious programs to classify as spyware. Participants help discover new threats quickly and notify Microsoft analysts, so that everyone is better protected. Anyone who uses Windows Defender can join this network and help report potential spyware to Microsoft.
To help protect your computer from the latest threats, you can choose to have updates that counteract new spyware automatically downloaded to your computer.
Windows Defender is included with all versions of Windows Vista and is available to download for genuine copies of Windows XP Service Pack 2 or later, or Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 or later.

Census Information….Scam??

Census Information

SECURITY ALERT:
U. S. Census Scam

Here are some tips to help you recognize fraudulent activity or unofficial data collections.

If you are contacted for any
of the following reasons

Do Not Participate.

It is NOT the U.S. Census Bureau.

Phishing:

‘Phishing’ is the criminally fraudulent process of attempting to acquire sensitive information such as usernames, passwords, social security numbers, bank account or credit card details by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication. Phishing is typically carried out by email and it often directs users to enter sensitive information at a fake web site whose look and feel are almost identical to the legitimate one.
Other Scams:

* The Census Bureau does NOT conduct the 2010 Census via the Internet
* The Census Bureau does not send emails about participating in the 2010 Census
* The Census Bureau never:
o Asks for your full social security number
o Asks for money or a donation
o Sends requests on behalf of a political party
o Requests PIN codes, passwords or similar access information for credit cards, banks or other financial accounts.

How to report scams and bogus Census web sites

If you believe you have been contacted as part of bogus or fraudulent activity falsely representing the Census Bureau:

* In Person Scam
o Check for a valid Census ID badge
o Ask for a SECOND form of ID
o Census workers should NEVER ask to enter your home
o Call your regional office to verify you are in a survey
* Email Scams
o If you think it is a bogus email, do not reply or click on any links within the email.
o Do not open any attachments. Attachments may contain code that could infect your computer
o Forward the email or web site URL to the Census Bureau at ITSO.Fraud.Reporting@census.gov.
o After you forward the email to us, delete the message. You will not receive a confirmation email after forwarding the information to us. However, the Census Bureau will investigate the information and notify you of its findings.
* Mail Scams
* Contact the United States Postal Inspection Service

Is your survey legitimate?

You may further verify if a collection activity is legitimate by calling your regional census office regarding mail surveys, and our National Processing Center for phone surveys. Other questions may be answered through our Are You In a Survey? page.
From the U. S. Census Bureau- Fraudulent Activity and Scams

The Census Bureau uses a workforce of trained federal employees to conduct a variety of household and business surveys by telephone, in-person interviews, through the mail, and in limited cases through the Internet. We understand your personal information is sensitive, and go to great lengths to protect the data we collect. Although we cannot stop or warn against all bogus or false collections of data.
